27 April 2021

Mielec, April 27, 2021 – Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze a Lockheed Martin company has hosted the third edition of the Code Quest programming competition in Poland. Thirty teams from secondary schools in Mielec, Rzeszów, Kolbuszowa, Leżajsk, Dębica and Tarnów took part in the competition. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, for the first time the event was held virtually.

This year's winner in the basic programming category is a team from II Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Mikołaja Kopernika from Mielec. Students from III Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Adama Mickiewicza in Tarnow proved to be the best in the advanced programming group category.

Advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is a critical focus for Lockheed Martin globally. It’s important for industry to support the education of young people in these areas. In Poland, the nation’s engineering sector will depend on a constant supply of highly trained, highly capable technical talent and Lockheed Martin is committed to supporting this work.,” said Robert Orzyłowski, Lockheed Martin director Poland and CEE.

Code Quest is an international, annual programming competition in which teams of two or three  students work for a maximum of 2.5 hours to solve a set of tasks using one of the programming languages: JAVA, Python, VB.net, C # and C ++. The worksheet consists of 30 questions developed by Lockheed Martin programmers and engineers, with teams competing in both basic and advanced categories.

The competition was initiated in 2012 in one of Lockheed Martin’s businesses in the U.S. and has  quickly grown in popularity

Code Quest aims to stimulate young people to take an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics related careers and I’m delighted to see it become more popular in Poland every year, In 2019, the first year we had 18 entries. This year, despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 we attracted 30. This is important news in the context of the challenges posed by the increasingly specialized labor market - said Janusz Zakręcki, PZL Mielec President and General Director.

Globally, more than 1400 students representing nearly 600 teams participated in Code Quest. Events were held in fifteen Lockheed Martin locations worldwide including the U.S. UK, Poland and Australia.
